My Front Porch Garden

We already have tomatoes on the plant!

Every year I attempt to grow some sort of garden, believe me I am NO green thumb, normally I get frustrated mid-summer. This year with my life being a bit more chaotic, I decided I would do a “front porch” garden, mostly in pots, and very simple!

The kid's thought this was just great, they are growing their own flowers beside my tomatoes.

I think this is perfect, because they can tend to the garden for me!

Now, I must pray that our dear dog Wheeler don't eat our garden again this year, and I produce an abundance of veggies!

Elephant Rocks State Park.....Natures Jungle Gym

Take a climb along Missouri’s Elephant rocks; Nature’s jungle gym, hidden away in Missouri.

The 7.5-acre Elephant Rock natural area may be small compared to many Missouri State Parks, but you will find much to do while there. Tower Rock, Perry County Missouri

Gone Fishing

Much like hunting, trout fishing is not my expertise. However, this past summer my dear Ryan and I had the unique opportunity to take fly casting lessons from one of the experts at Bennett Spring State Park.
Prior to arriving at Bennett Spring State Park my fishing skills and experience was very limited, in fact the only fishing pole I own is a Snoopy child’s fishing pole that I would occasionally take the kids creek fishing with.

Wow, was this past weekend a bit of a tease or what? With way above average temperatures and two kiddos fighting a severe case of “cabin” fever, Ryan and I decided it was time to hit the hiking trails.
We had intended to visit Elephant Rock State Park, but after a few detours, we ended up at a place called Millstream Garden Conservation Area. There is no disappointment in my voice, Millstream Gardens is a little piece of Heaven here on Earth…yes it was splendid.
Normally I refuse to hike any trails that I have not “preapproved” for fear of how difficult it might be half- way in. To my relief Millstream Gardens is much like Mingo, Cape Girardeau Nature Centers Trails, and Elephant Rock State Park’s trail….kid friendly and mother approved. With a paved trail for a good deal of ways, plenty of resting points, and nice flat area for kiddos to run a head we had one amazing afternoon.Continue here to finish reading

First Day Hike at Trail of Tears State Park

Is there any other better way to kick off 2012 than to kick it off with great hike in the woods? Is your New Year’s resolution to get more active, spend more time outdoors, or have more fun as a family?
Trail of Tears State Park in Jackson, Mo., is participating in the First Day Hike of 2012 and no matter what your New Year’s resolution might be, hiking away New Year’s Day will work for all of them.

If I sat here and tried to tell you how many times I have hiked Trail of Tears, we would probably be here all day. My very first hike was as a child with my Dad, my latest hike with kiddos and our giant puppy, Wheeler, to my favorite hike when my dear hubby was still trying to win my heart and planned a hiking date……gentleman, it worked he won it! Slipping and Sliding at Silver Mines…I WISH!

Oh the warm lazy summer days…this yucky, cold, rainy day has me dreaming of summer again. Sigh why we must endure winter for only too short of a summer! Yep, I am a true summer girl, born smack dab in the middle of it. You can give me a watermelon, garden hose, and a shade tree and you have made my day.

Well since my birthday is smack dab in the middle of summer, I usually have an amazing birthday ADVENTURE. Since this past summer, I celebrated my last 20 something birthday (shhhh don’t tell everyone I am getting old) we slipped the day away at Silver Mines Recreational Area.

I must declare this is one of Missouri’s well-hidden jewels and one of our favorite nature retreats. I had seen a few pictures of the place, heard talk of it, but after doing research, I knew it was our kind of place. Continue to Read More

Bollinger Mill State Historic Site

Today our favorite natural retreat is Bollinger Mill State Historic Site in Burfordville, MO. Some will say I chose this place because It is close to our house, yes that is nice, but there is much more.
These are my favorite things about Bollinger Mill State Historic Site:

-No Playground- I know mom’s everywhere are saying, “she is CRAY” no I am not crazy YET! I use the fact that there is NO playground for us to intrigue our imagination. Our last summer picnic at Bollinger Mill was absolutely beautiful, we packed the bubbles; picnic basket, a few dump trucks and we were off to GET GOOD and DIRTY! Mommy’s little man calls this the “Good Life” when we get good and dirty.Continue to Read More

A Walk in the Park at Cape Girardeau Nature Center

We have rounded the corner of October into November and this year has almost slipped away. Sadly, those warm days will come fewer and farther apart, but every chance we get we still try to spend some days OUTSIDE.

The Gang

One of our favorite places to spend those few warm days at is the Cape Girardeau Nature Center's Trails. Why you ask? These trails are not only kid friendly, but they are MOM friendly….I love the outdoors, love to hike, love to discover nature, but as I have recently been told, I have not discovered my “inner compass” yet.

Our Tree People

The trails at Cape Girardeau Nature Center are well marked, well laid out, and easy to follow….even my gal pal and I braved it with FIVE kids and survived….some call us crazy! Our day on the trail we discovered a turtle, enjoyed the changing leaves, and burnt up lots of extra energy.

The “White Oak Trace” trail is 2 miles long, which offers just enough time for those little people to run out of energy and still enjoy it.

Tips of the Trail

- No Pets allowed…not even on a leash, so leave your furry friends at home this trip out.

- Trail is open from sunrise till 10pm daily

- The Nature Center is open Tuesday – Saturday 8-5 (except holidays)

- Parts of the trail are handicap accessible & STROLLER FRIENDLY, but not all sections.
