The
Story of Drycreek
Author
Earl Schrum
In
these hills and hollows of my home are streams that don’t run dry
Each
place is named of one time fame, I hear and wonder why?
To
the east stands Clemmons Mountain to the peak an easy climb
I’d
like to go back to The Old low Gap and sit there for a time
Off
to the west, she stands full dressed Rock Pile Mountain standing tall
And
through the haze you can see these days her brightest colors of the Fall
The
trail up there through that thin air can be made, if you really want to try
Around
through the brush, up over the bluffs and rocks piled to the sky
Trace
Creek winds her way round Rock Piles base her waters stained and brown
From
run off at the sawmill ya pass on the way to town
In
these hills and hollows of my home are streams that don’t run dry
To
see man’s pollution of our streams, just makes me cuss and cry!
To
the north along the winding ridge stands Cedar mountains peak
The
trip up there in winter’s icy glare is not made for, or by the weak
Her
granite top strewn with rocks, boulders, and rattlesnakes
The
size of which I won’t speak
Come
walk with me down my road; let the creek sing you a song
It
tells it is tales of hills and vales and its destination, to another creek
Twelve Miles long
In
these hills and hollows of my home are streams that don’t run dry
Each
place is named of one time fame, I hear and wonder why?
She
sings the names, places, and old folks of a long gone past
Of
Long and Sulfur hollow as she moves along slow and sometimes fast
Of
whispering Pines and the Last Resort and the old Ben Stevens Place
Waters
cold and clear of memories held so dear, and life moves a slower pace
Each
place is named of one time fame, I hear and wonder why?
Here
I sit between these hills, the water, and the sky
Of
her secrets and solutions, she won’t answer more
Just
follow Drycreek to the end; she goes dry at the church front door
Earl is a comedian by day, and a poet by
night! Just kidding folks, but Earl does share the TRUE Missouri
spirit. Earl is a proud Missourian, and probably has funny as any
Missourian may come. Thank You Earl for taking the time to share your
poetry!
